Savory Buffalo Chicken Calzone brings zesty spice and hearty comfort to your dinner table. Melted cheese, tender chicken, and bold buffalo sauce create a mouthwatering pocket of deliciousness you’ll crave again and again.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Protein:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken breast (shredded or diced)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups (540 milliliters) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 milliliters) warm water
  • 2 tablespoons (30 milliliters) olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Additional Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) buffalo sauce
  • 1/4 cup (60 milliliters) ranch or blue cheese dressing
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley (optional)
  • Extra buffalo sauce and ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast by mixing with warm water and sugar in a large bowl. Allow to become frothy for approximately 5 minutes.
  2. Create dough by incorporating flour, salt, and olive oil into the yeast mixture. Knead thoroughly on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  3. Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm location for 60 minutes until volume doubles.
  4. Prepare buffalo chicken filling by thoroughly coating cooked chicken with buffalo sauce and ranch dressing in a mixing bowl.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F and divide risen dough into two equal portions.
  6. Roll each dough portion into 8-10 inch circular shapes on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Layer half the buffalo chicken mixture on one side of each dough circle, maintaining a small border around edges.
  8. Distribute mozzarella cheese, red onion, and chopped herbs over the chicken mixture.
  9. Fold dough’s opposite side over the filling, creating a half-moon shape. Seal edges firmly by pressing and crimping with a fork.
  10. Place calzones on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cut small steam vents on top.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  12. Allow calzones to rest for 3-5 minutes before slicing. Serve with additional buffalo sauce and dressing for optional dipping.

Notes

  • Swap chicken with tofu or plant-based protein for a vegetarian version that maintains the spicy buffalo flavor profile.
  • Use gluten-free flour blend to create a celiac-friendly dough without compromising texture or taste.
  • Reduce buffalo sauce quantity for milder palates, gradually adjusting heat level to suit individual preferences.
  • Prep dough ahead of time and refrigerate overnight to develop deeper, more complex fermentation flavors and save cooking time.
